Hindu ritual box, depicting a bull (metal or bronze) surrounded by four rats. Indonesia, 19th century, possibly Bali.
Dedicated to Shiva and Ganesh, the bull (Nandi) is the vehicle of the former, while the rats are that of the latter.
The rats carry two colors: yellow symbolizes knowledge and learning (mental development, meditation) as well as happiness, peace and stability. It is also the color of Ganesh. In Hinduism, red represents honor, love and prosperity.
