Nielling is a goldsmithing technique which consists of applying niello, which means “blackened” in Latin, a black-colored metallic sulphide that includes, among other things, copper and silver. It is used as a filler in metal marquetry.
The engraved metal is filled with this molten alloy along the lines produced by the chisel engraving, then the niello surface is polished to remove excess added metal.
A technique known since antiquity in Egypt, it was forgotten from the 17th century before becoming fashionable again in the 19th century thanks to the damascener André Colomb (1786-1838).
