A rectangular, silvered bronze betel nut box (lutuan) with chamfered corners, decorated using traditional metalwork techniques.

The interior opens to reveal a system of three movable compartments accessed by four hinged lids.

This box retains its two handles on the sides.

The metalwork, typical of the Maranao people of Mindanao Island (southern Philippines), features a rich decoration of scrolls and stylized plant motifs characteristic of their traditional repertoire.
The lid and exterior surfaces are entirely covered with these motifs, contrasting sharply with the natural brown patina of the bronze and the silver patina.
These ceremonial boxes were reserved for the aristocracy (datu). They were used to store the ingredients necessary for preparing betel quid: areca nuts, betel leaves, slaked lime, and sometimes tobacco or spices.

Good overall condition despite some wear to the patina.
