Painted wooden box from Spa, known as “jolité de Spa.” Handcrafted in the spa town of Spa since the 17th century, these boxes were intended for sale to spa guests visiting the town. This box features a rare bird motif; on the lid, a peony bullfinch is depicted within a medallion of flowers. On the back and sides are a goldfinch, a robin, and a chaffinch. The paintings are of high quality and form a charming ensemble. The interior is painted, and the box comes with its original key. It dates from the first half of the 19th century. Spa boxes typically feature motifs of flowers, landscapes, dogs, and cats. This bird motif is very rare.
