A rare and impressive pair of hexagonal vases from Japan, Meiji period, carved from natural bone. The finely engraved decoration depicts traditional Japanese scenes: figures in kimonos, birds, peonies, and other floral motifs. Each vase is topped with an openwork structure containing a sculpted figurine, evoking a miniature temple or pavilion.

These are typical pieces of Japanese art exported at the end of the 19th century, during the Japonisme movement.
