The name Shi Sou (石叟, literally “the old man Shi”) is traditionally associated with a Buddhist monk from the late Ming dynasty, renowned for creating bronze Buddhist figures as well as refined objects intended for scholars, adorned with inlays of gold and silver threads. Another interpretation has been put forward by Rose Kerr, who suggests that “Shi Sou” may in fact correspond to a trade name used by one or more entrepreneurs overseeing a network of artisans in the Jiangnan region and commissioning series of objects based on market demand.
