The triskel has been the emblem of Sicily since antiquity.
From the ancient Greek "Trinakria" meaning "three points".
This ancient name for Sicily was given by the Greeks in the 3rd century BC, due to the triangular shape of the island with its 3 capes.
It depicts a woman's head, Medusa, one of the three Gorgons, winged and topped with a knot of snakes and ears of wheat, from which three bent legs radiate, as if caught in the middle of a race.
"Trinacria" is the symbol of Sicily, so much so that it is depicted on the island's flag.
