This earthenware Virgin Mary in labor dates from the 18th century; its age and authenticity are beyond doubt, most likely from Nevers.
The Virgin Mary in labor is a statuette frequently found in homes from the 18th to 19th centuries. On the Virgin's head, there is a hollowed-out crown with a two-centimeter diameter hole at the bottom. Through this hole, holy water could be poured into the statuette, but more importantly, a candle could be placed to light it when the woman's labor began.
Note traces of wear and friction, typical firing defects on this type of object, and a later restoration on the back (visible in our photos).
