Large, one-of-a-kind, entirely hand-carved folk art religious sculpture in wood, Alpine work, Austro-Tyrolean, circa 1900-1930. Depicting the Virgin Mary, standing on a crescent moon crushing a snake. This iconography traditionally corresponds to the Immaculate Conception, a widespread theme in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Figure with soft face and loose hair, wearing a loose, flowing drapery. The surface of the wood, probably basswood, is stained and polished, giving it a warm, satiny patina between dark brown and burgundy red. The underside of the base shows traces of tools and old workmanship, and probably illegible later inscriptions.
Height 44cm, maximum width 17cm, maximum depth 14cm. Good overall condition, with a natural crack in the wood running from the side of the head, down the torso and abdomen, then under the sleeve to the side of the base. The end of one hand is slightly missing, and a few traces of wear are visible on the other hand and the base. These flaws are discreet and consistent with the age and use of the piece. Approx. 800-900gr.
