Christ on the Cross

Christ carved in boxwood with a slightly orange patina on the raised areas and brown on the deeper areas such as the hair and the folds of the loincloth. The loincloth is unusual in that it is not marked with a knot but rather hemmed around Christ's waist.
His hair, with its finely incised locks, is swept back. His head, turned to his right, gazes imploringly towards heaven. His short beard is divided into two strands – this new style of iconographic representation emerged in the mid-16th century.
His legs are bent and his feet are one on top of the other: the left rests on the right, and both were pierced by a single nail – as were each of his hands.
