In an elegant, lightly carved gilded wooden frame, our reliquary honors large ex-ossibus relics arranged around a central wax medallion, set in a monstrance, the result of a montage of gilded papers.
The main relics, i.e. those integrated into the monstrance, are those of Saints Didier and Félicissime.
The first is Saint Didier, probably from Langres, in reference to his bishopric, who was martyred in 407.
In mirror image, we find Saint Félicissime, a deacon in the service of Pope Sixtus II, martyred in 258 with his companions.
Six other relics accompany this devotional work:
Saint Philippe Neri, canonized in 1622, relics probably brought back later.
Saint Illuminée, martyred 303 A.D.
Saint Donat, Martyr of the year 362
Saint Valentin, Martyr
Saint Justin, Martyr
A final relic, largely detached from its support (top right-hand corner), is unidentifiable.
Interesting provenance label on the reverse, mentioning the sale of this piece in an auction room in 1927.
Fine condition for this antique reliquary, despite some interior damage.
