Rare oak cabinet with two sections, composed of carved panels from the Flemish Renaissance* depicting episodes from the Prodigal Son (Flemish inscriptions), the lower part decorated with caryatids from the same period. These elements were found in Alsace and originated in Mechelen, dating from the mid-16th century. This cabinet was assembled by the Marquis de Marguerie** in the 19th century.

This cabinet is in very good condition and is of exceptional quality. Richly carved, with high-quality decorations. It opens with two doors and two drawers at the top / one door and one drawer at the bottom / doors on the sides (with secret compartments at the bottom).
A detailed explanation of its origin is located inside one door. The 16th-century panels and statues were found by the Marquis de Marguerie in Alsace in the 19th century. He had them mounted as furniture (with a certain Mr. Félix de Robinet de Cléry) in the 19th century (1879-80) in Saint Epvre, and displayed his coat of arms, visible with the caryatids (azure with three daisies). It is noted that these panels were of such fine quality that the director of the Cluny Museum requested casts for the Trocadéro Museum (most likely the Museum of French Monuments inaugurated in 1879 by Viollet-le-Duc).
Note: some wear and tear on the wood and sculptures; please examine the photos carefully. Additional detailed photo files are available for download below.

     * The term Flemish Renaissance is a historiographical expression that refers to a period of artistic production during the Renaissance in the Southern Netherlands. The period began in 1500 and ended in 1584. Artists drew on recent innovations in Italian painting and local traditions derived from the Flemish Primitives. Mechelen was the administrative and legal capital of the Burgundian Netherlands, a political, intellectual, and cultural center in the late 15th and early 16th centuries.
** Antoine Bon Henri Gustave (1821–1887), Marquis de Marguerie, Inspector General of Finance, Officer of the Legion of Honor.
