Maison Lecan presents this coffee table by Robert and Jean Cloutier, made in the 1950s, featuring an enameled lava top and a black-lacquered metal frame. This is a well-known design by the Cloutier brothers, which can now be found at the Les Roches Rouges hotel in Saint-Raphaël, where it blends beautifully into the decor.
Its standout feature is the tabletop. Two large slabs of enameled lava in shades of orange, ochre, and brown, with thick layers of enamel that form a raised crust in places. Recesses carved into the material are filled with turquoise fused glass, crackled throughout: a long band, a circle, a square, and four small squares. No two Cloutier tabletops are alike, and this one is particularly rich in detail.
The plates are set in a black-lacquered metal frame, resting on four straight, welded legs. A simple design that lets the ceramic take center stage.
The table has been fully restored. The left plate has a very slight crack running its entire height. We had both plates laminated onto a wooden panel using a very strong adhesive: the crack has been stabilized and will not move any further. It is barely visible to the naked eye, but it is definitely there.
