Oak monastery table, of the type known as a "refectory table", in the tradition of the monastic tables of the 17th and 18th centuries. Fully demountable, it is assembled without a single screw or nail: two trestle supports, a stretcher and two wedges, with the top fitting onto two tenons.
The thick top has a framed edge and oak panels laid out in compartments, held with exposed wooden pegs. The two supports, of shaped baluster form, rest on feet with curved ends. They are joined by a high stretcher with through tenons, locked by two wedges. Incised assembly marks identify the matching of the parts.
Excellent condition. The structure is sound and very stable, and the joints are tight. The oak has a warm, even patina, with slight natural shrinkage gaps between the panels and the frame of the top, normal for this type of construction.
French work, probably, first half of the 20th century.
