Beautiful set of 6 napkins and matching tablecloth in damask linen from the 1900s/1920s with a single white and red monogrammed letter. The embroidery is very delicate. Damask is also very beautiful. Art Nouveau / early Art Deco - French handwork. Each napkin and tablecloth is in linen damask, spun and monogrammed with the letter M in the center: the letter M is embroidered in relief with a red border. The tablecloth bears the monogram twice. The monograms here are finely hand-embroidered and surrounded by red "fleurs de lys" at each end of the letter. The edge of the letter is red to give volume to the monogram. Napkins measure 85 cm x 70 cm (33.46 inches x 27.56 inches). The tablecloth measures 230 cm x 172 cm (90.55 inches x 67.72 inches) This beautiful set of early 20th century antique linens is of great delicacy and refinement. The red embroidery on the edge of the monogram is very rare. The napkins and tablecloth are very elegant and refined. Damask is a monochrome silk fabric with a satin weave, characterized by a contrast of brilliance between the background and the pattern formed by the weave. Damask or damasks are woven, not embroidered, patterns. These two methods are not mutually exclusive. Indeed, on damask sheets, tablecloths and towels, the monogram of the master of the house is often embroidered. Unlike embroidery, damask patterns are discreet. There can be only two colors in damask fabrics: weft and warp. But most damask linens and fabrics are unicolored.
