Rare and Exceptional Secretary cabinet in precious wood, stamped J. Popsel, Louis XV - XVIIIth century

A rare and beautiful Louis XV secretary stamped Popsel, inlaid with rosewood and violet wood.
This commissioned piece of furniture is a unique and unusual model, specially made by one of Paris's greatest cabinetmakers in the mid-18th century, for an important figure at the court of Louis XV.
Jean Popsel, a cabinetmaker of German origin born in 1720, worked for several years as a privileged craftsman in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, before becoming a master on July 5, 1755. Until the end of Louis XV's reign, he lived on rue Traversière. He then moved to rue Saint-Nicolas and didn't stop working until after 1785.
Known for his harmonious furniture, Popsel has created a unique piece of furniture of ideal proportions. It also bears the Jurande mark (JME).
The top of the piece features a "chapeau de gendarme" cornice composed of a groove and a quarter-round, with rosewood and violetwood veneer.
At the top, two large doors are each adorned with a butterfly-winged rosewood veneer. Around them, a diagonal violet wood strip cut from the inside forms a moving line. These doors are fitted with original bronze escutcheons, a lock in perfect working order and, on the left-hand door, an original sliding system with a post-18th-century key.
Both doors open onto a large storage area with two original oak shelves, adjustable on a rack.
The front of the wide flap is also veneered with two butterfly-winged rosewood leaf compositions, surrounded by violet wood, also worked in a flowing pattern.
The original lock is in perfect condition, along with a bronze escutcheon and a later key. On opening, the flap is held in place by original brass compasses.
The lid is trimmed in original brown leather with cold-stamped vignette and mitered violet wood frame.
The oak interior features two drawers on either side, whose rosewood veneered movement fronts are embellished with an original bronze knob and rosette. There are also deep niches of various sizes.
The lower part of the cabinet features two further doors, also inlaid with a butterfly-wing composition of rosewood and surrounded by diagonal violet wood. The bronze lock and keyhole are original. The interior features a fixed shelf on cleats.
