A piece of furniture with a secret system for this magnificent carved walnut stepped desk, circa 1850.
The drawers and drop-leaf are adorned with square-shaped locks hidden in the knobs, and access to them requires removing the decorative ball.
Decorated with fluting, cartouches, and geometric shapes.
It opens along the edge with two drawers overhanging a low, fretwork crosspiece. The whole rests on a base of small, stacked, arched legs joined by an H-shaped brace.
The upper part consists of a drop-leaf decorated with fleurons, the whole framed laterally by two openwork, carved consoles representing snakes and accompanied by two stepped drawers.
The curved sides with recessed panels frame an interior composed of a large storage niche.
