    Jean Paul Mazaroz (1823-1900)
    Pair of bookcases
    Blackened pearwood and oak
    19th century
    circa 1850
    Signed: P Mazaroz RN 17429 and 17 430

Exceptional pair of bookcases in blackened pearwood and oak.
A clever blend of different styles adorns these bookcases designed to hold knowledge. The carving is skilfully bold. The lower section is divided into three and punctuated by four columns on the front and one on the side at the back, on either side of doors richly carved with dolphins, with an alcove in the center. Three drawers decorated with scrolls are found in the waistband. The top of the bookcases is also punctuated by four columns on the front and one on the side at the back, fluted and crowned with Ionic capitals. It opens onto three glass doors with decor influenced by Gothic cathedral windows. The cabinet is crowned by a broken pediment, cushioned by a sculpted motif.
