Louis XVI Painted Wood Center Table, France Circa 1780.

An elegant centerpiece known as a "game table," beautifully proportioned and with an interesting architecture, it is made of carved and painted wood, topped with a thick marble top, most likely Sainte-Anne marble, renowned for its deep blue-gray hues and fine white veining. The marble is molded with a quarter-round fillet, adding to the nobility of the piece.

Entirely carved on all four sides, this table features a sheathed base, carved with a single, wide groove on each side, accommodating a reed in its lower part.

This architectural form, of great sobriety, is fully in keeping with the neoclassical taste developed at the end of the 18th century and is found much less frequently than other Louis XVI leg models.

The apron decoration consists of a frieze of vertical canework, highlighted by projecting water drops, an ornamental vocabulary directly inspired by Greco-Roman antiquity.

While this table cannot be attributed to a specific workshop, its style, and especially its base, clearly evokes the work of the carpenter Pierre Nicolas Pillot in Nîmes, as well as that of Jean-Baptiste Boulard, who worked in Paris, notably for the Garde-Meuble Royal.

The paint is old, with a beautiful patina and some slight wear.

Beautifully crafted, made entirely of oak, the joints are pegged, and the inside of the apron features hand-sawn lines with a regular cut. Wrought iron nails are also visible to hold the sculpted projections. All these features clearly demonstrate 18th-century craftsmanship, produced by a good workshop. Note that the base is topped with a paneled parquet floor, also made of oak, a rare occurrence, which ensures good stability.

The piece of furniture is in very good condition. There is some wear on the marble top, which is quite normal for an antique marble piece that must have served its purpose well.

This is both a decorative and collectible piece of furniture, which can be used as a centerpiece or a console table. Thanks to its relatively low height, this table can easily be placed under a window.
