The return of Charles II to the throne in 1660 (Restoration) and the reign of William III (1689-1702) with his wife Mary II Stuart correspond to an important aesthetic change.
Dutch artists and French Huguenots fleeing France following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685 participated in the influence of the Louis XIV baroque style in England.
The lines become more graceful and ample. The regular and architectural forms structure the furniture with plain, smooth but more richly decorated surfaces.
