The first glassworks was established in 1586. In 1767, it took the name “Royal Glassworks of Saint Louis” (in memory of Louis IX). The glassworks later passed to the Lassalle family before being sold in 1788 to Baron du Coëtlosquet.
In 1781, the new Royal Glassworks of Saint-Louis were among the first on the continent to develop crystal (after England).
In 1829, the glassworks became the Compagnie des Cristalleries de Saint-Louis. The crystal factory, which is still in operation today, was acquired in 1989 by the famous luxury house Hermès
More than 2,000 exceptional pieces are on display at the heart of the Saint-Louis Manufactory, in a unique architectural setting designed by architects Florence Lipsky and Pascal Rollet.
This piece was created in 1908. The thistle was the inspiration for the design of this tableware set, specially created for the 1908 Nancy Exhibition, at the height of the Art Nouveau movement.
Subsequently, in the spirit of the Entente Cordiale, “Chardon” was anglicized to “Thistle” and went on to grace the finest dining tables.
