    Pair of Medici vases
    Molded and cut crystal
    Dimensions: H. 13; D. 9 (at the collar) (cm.)
    Creusot, or Baccarat around 1820 - 1840

Charming and unusual pair of so-called "violet" vases given this format. Medici form, resting on a pedestal decorated with a rosette mesh. The upper part is decorated with a frieze of warheads. The lip is strongly gadrooned.

This model is listed in the catalog of joint productions of Saint Louis and Baccarat in 1840 under the name "gothic". However, this model was previously produced by the Le Creusot factory.

    The Creusot factory
Crystal was a virtual English monopoly in the 18th century, which is why Louis XVI sought to have the national industry produce all imported objects, and created a Crystal Factory, under the patronage of Queen Marie-Antoinette. The management is entrusted to MM. Lambert and Boyer, from Autun, and the factory installed in Sèvres.

But the directors soon realized that, to compete with English crystals, it was necessary for the Crystal Factory to be located near a center providing them with fuel at a lower price than in Paris. After serious studies carried out on site, they decided to transfer their Cristallerie to Le Creusot.
And, in 1785, construction of the new establishment began.

We may wonder why the Montcenis coal mine was chosen rather than another for the installation of the Cristallerie de la Reine.
For several reasons. The first is that the Creusot mine was known in high places for having excellent coal which already supplied the Royal Foundry; secondly, because there were, in the immediate vicinity, suitable sand quarries. perfectly for the intended use (Rue de la Sablière led to these quarries located on Place de la Molette).
To these causes, we must add another: the good lead ore which was also found in the surrounding area, at Saint-Prix-sous-Beuvray, and which was used in the manufacture of crystals.
