A little history .....
Even before his career as a master glassmaker, André Delatte had several professions (upholsterer, banker). Close to the Muller brothers, glassmakers in Lunéville, he visited their factory and discovered a real vocation for artistic glass work, particularly chemistry. After studying the techniques, he opened his first glass workshop in 1919 in Nancy, rue du Faubourg des Trois-Maisons, where he decorated pieces blown by the Muller glassworks.
In 1921, André Delatte opened his first kiln, a small art glass factory, Les Verreries de l'Est SA in Jarville, near Nancy. In 1926, the factory expanded in Nancy, with the engraving workshop at 16 rue de Metz and the head office at quai Ligier Richier. During the same period, while the success was there, the workforce grew from thirty to sixty qualified workers, often simply hired from the competing Daum glassworks. Faced with this intrusion, Daum did not remain inactive: in 1922 it retaliated by filing a lawsuit against the Delatte glassworks for counterfeiting, but the appeal judgment rejected Daum. It is undeniable that if the two glass factories use the same techniques and that the productions are close, in particular by the vases engraved with the acid or enamelled with the naturalist decoration, Delatte creates its own models which have a clean style, a "trademark". Because of the competition with Daum, but especially because of the great crisis, the factory is subject to an amicable liquidation in the thirties. After the closure of his factory in Nancy in 1938, André Delatte created the company "Art et Verrerie" in Rive-de-Gier, a major glass-making town. This new company name, Art et Verrerie, was not successful and the Delatte establishments were closed down.
