France, 18th century: three wine glasses, circular foot, flat-rimmed leg extended with faceted bow, flat-rimmed goblet to stem;
The small size (14cm) and modest capacity of these glasses can be explained by the custom, in force until the early 19th century, of keeping the glasses turned upside down in a cooler filled with ice throughout the meal: when a guest wished to take a few sips of wine, he would signal to his valet, who would bring him the chilled glass after filling it. Once the wine had been drunk, the glass was returned to the cooler, on a sideboard, and not placed on the table.
Glasses sold individually or in sets. One of them has a few chips on the rim.
