Fabulous theater cover project by Serge Tchekhonine
Serge Chekhonin is a Russian artist who studied applied drawing, ceramics and pottery in St. Petersburg.
Serge Chekhonin moved to France in 1928. He was noted for his fine ceramics, having directed the Petrograd State Factory, as well as for his portraits and miniatures. "His work is extremely varied. It is reminiscent of those Renaissance artists who approached the most diverse fields of art with the same mastery and perfection" reported the daily newspaper l'Homme Libre on June 11, 1929, on the occasion of his solo exhibition.
In France, he worked with jewelers and painters, and associated himself with theaters, designing costumes and posters.
This work is a cover design for Vera Nemtchinova's Ballets Russes for the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in 1930.
The artist was one of the Russians who settled in Paris in the 1930s, like Léon Bakst. The influence of the Russian avant-garde can be seen in her treatment of simplified, geometrized bodies, and in her unprecedented sense of movement and dynamism. His work is also highly decorative and colorful, reminiscent of the art of collage.
It's a brown ink drawing, with watercolor and gouache highlights on paper. Signed lower left. Supplied with a certificate of authenticity.
