Andrew Fairbairn Affleck (1874-1935) was a Scottish artist . He travelled widely and spent time in England, Belgium and Spain before finally settling in France. Many of his works are architectural subjects which reflect the places he lived and were suitable subjects for the precise detail and mastery of light and shadow that he was well-known for.
This piece of work showing the gothic edifice of Bruges City Hall was created sometime after 1905 according to the Museum of New Zealand who house a copy. They give some interesting details of the artist's life and point out that a major feature of this print and it's quality, is that the size is possibly five times greater than the works of many contemporaries and suggest that this gives another aspect of grandeur to an already impressive building.
The overall size is roughly 75 cms x 57 but the area of the etching is about 58 x 47. There is no frame, mount or backing board - although you can see the strips of paper which held it to one. This came to me rolled up in a tube which is how I will post it. It is a little worn around the edges, with 2 small tears to the thick paper the work has been printed on. There is no damage that threatens the image, just signs of age and wear most notably staining and creasing. Please look carefully at the photos to check that for yourselves and if you have any questions, please ask. There is an etched signature incorporated into the work itself and the artist has signed in pencil beneath the lower right corner of his work.
