Large early 19th-century engraving in gilded wood frame with gold leaf. Empire-Restoration period, circa 1815-1820.

It depicts the famous painting "Le serment des Horaces" after the original work by Jacques Louis David in 1785. It depicts the scene in which the three Horatii brothers swear an oath to their father to win or die in the coming war against the Curiatii. This subject, a masterpiece of neoclassicism, was a huge success under the Empire, as it exalts the military sacrifice of heroes. It gave rise to numerous interpretations: in engravings, oil on canvas, tapestries and clocks.

Our engraving is a fine antique print, presented in a beautiful Empire-period palmettes frame, gilded with gold leaf and its original blown-glass pane.

A beautiful, highly decorative piece, a fine addition to an Empire collection with a reference subject.

Very good condition. Some wetness on the engraving. The frame has been cleaned by our gilder.
