Beautiful plate, engraving from Diderot and d'Alembert's encyclopedia, presenting cross-sectional plans of 2 18th-century warships of the French Royal Navy: a ship of the line and a galley. Eighteenth-century engravings in Louis XVI-style gilded wood frames.
A fine set, an opportunity to evoke what might have been the bedroom or workroom of a naval officer under the Restoration circa 1820. As the boards date from the 18th century, the French flag here is the white royal flag of the Ancien Régime, not the tricolor of the Revolution and Empire.
The set is in excellent condition, with the gilded frame restored by our gilder. No damage or missing parts, very fine gilding.
