French School of the 18th century, drawing enhanced with watercolor and gouache. It represents a gallant, or rather ribald, scene: called the interrupted lesson, our work is a geometry lesson which switches to another activity. Beautiful interior scene with typical Louis XVI period decor. The drawing is signed "Borel inv" on the geography map placed on the table on the right. The drawing is presented in a beautiful carved and gilded wooden frame with gold leaf from the Louis XVI period.

On the back, an auction label at Drouot from January 21, 1932, former J Duval collection.

Antoine Borel (1743-1810), is a French painter, draftsman and engraver. He began his career in the footsteps of his father, a portrait painter, then specialized in scenes of morals and political subjects, most often in watercolor. Around 1780, two saucy scenes engraved by Jean-Louis Anselin were successful. Then he became almost exclusively a book illustration designer, and made a name for himself there. If, in this specialty, he often put his talent at the service of erotic books by Nerciat, Montigny or Sade, he also wrote a number of compositions for serious works, including Plutarque (1783), the Théâtre des Grecs (1785- 1789), the Works of Belloy (1787), Charles IX, tragedy of Chénier (1790); the Works of Regnard (1790)

Beautiful composition, finely done, the scene is very representative of the lightness of the art of living under the old regime. Very fresh, in a beautiful setting.
