James Coignard is a painter, ceramist, sculptor and engraver, born in Tours in 1925.
He had a brief 4-year career in administration.
At the age of 23, he discovered the landscapes of the Côte d'Azur, which inspired him to attend the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs in Nice.
His meeting with Paul Hervieu in 1950 was to prove decisive. His collaboration with the Hervieu gallery brought him recognition in the art world and abroad, notably in Scandinavia. Coignard was very much an itinerant artist, spending an American period in New Orleans (1985-88). His career as an artist is punctuated by group and solo exhibitions in France and abroad, where his art is often recognized (Sweden, Switzerland, USA, France, etc.).

Until the 60s, Coignard painted in an expressionist spirit, with subdued colors and highly worked materials. His path led him to abstraction, consisting of random stains, regular shapes and typographic characters. Backgrounds are given considerable substance, and harmonies are often brown or gray.
