A pair of gouache paintings depicting women dressed in classical style (vestales) in romantic landscapes: one rests her flower basket on a fluted column (perhaps an Allegory of the Altar of Friendship); the other is pensive at the foot of an amphora-urn (Allegory of Sensibility or Ode to Love), signed Fecit Caroline (possibly for the painter Caroline Von Der Embde*), dating from the 19th century.

These gouaches are in good condition, as are their giltwood frames. They are under glass. Signed within the landscape, see photos.

Note: some minor damage and wear to the frames, consistent with age, see photos.

* Caroline Von Der Embde (1812-1867): daughter of August von der Embde (1780-1862), the leading portrait painter of Kassel, the capital of the Elector of Hesse, Germany. A representative of 19th-century German Romantic painting.
