Bernard BUFFET (1928–1999) Tulips and Irises, 1996 Original color lithograph on paper Signed in pencil lower right Numbered 146/150 lower left 64 × 47 cm Framed In *Tulips and Irises*, Bernard Buffet revisits one of the recurring themes in his work: the bouquet of flowers. Against a luminous yellow background, red tulips and blue irises spread out around a vase in light tones, in a composition that is both frontal and strongly structured. The artist’s visual vocabulary is immediately recognizable. The forms are outlined with a powerful black line, extended by a dense network of hatching that animates the petals and foliage as well as the surrounding space. The vibrancy of the reds, blues, and yellows contrasts with this incisive graphic style and lends the composition a remarkable chromatic intensity. In Buffet’s work, the bouquet is never treated as a mere decorative still life. The flowers are constructed through drawing, almost architecturally arranged, and take on a singular presence. Their natural fragility contrasts with the firmness of the line, creating the tension characteristic of his pictorial language. Created in 1996, this lithograph belongs to Bernard Buffet’s late body of work. It attests to the continuity, right up to the final years of his career, of a style developed in the postwar period that became one of the most instantly recognizable visual signatures of 20th-century French art. Print signed by the artist and numbered 146/150.
