The wind of a dream blows through this tree with a human face - between myth and whisper, a soul hides there...
This rare and moving lithograph, entitled L'Arbre au visage, is an original graphic work by Jean Marais, created in 1973. With his free, almost dreamlike brushstrokes, the artist blends human and plant in a symbolic fusion: a face emerges from the trunk, sculpted by the tangled branches as if by the wind of time.
The print is signed in the plate, but also in pencil by Jean Marais himself, and dated in his hand "73" in the lower right-hand corner. It bears the number 2/10, revealing a very limited, almost confidential edition, which reinforces its appeal to collectors.
The paper, a natural vellum, shows a few small variations in texture and hue - dull flashes of whiteness, which could be mistaken for stains, but are in fact inherent to the very structure of the sheet. These peculiarities in no way detract from the work's readability; on the contrary, they testify to its authentic craftsmanship.
This work can be used in a variety of settings: suspended in a contemporary interior with its clean lines, it becomes a point of escape and reflection; placed in an antique library, it takes on the air of a poetic relic, like a forgotten dream by Apollinaire.
