    Jules-Alexandre Grün (1868-1938)
Portrait of little Robert Baudoin, 1897
    Pastel on canvas
    100 x 47 cm (119 x 65 cm with frame)
Signed and dedicated lower left "A mon petit ami Robert Baudoin, 29 mai 97".

Born in Paris in 1868, Jules Alexandre Grün began his career with Adam, then the most popular decorator in Paris, before becoming a pupil of Jean-Baptiste Lavastre, decorative painter at the Paris Opera. Grün's only desire at the time was to paint still lifes and landscapes: for behind the draughtsman and poster artist was the real painter, an admirer of Joseph Bail who influenced him greatly.
In 1881, the famous Chat Noir cabaret opened. As a teenager, Grün was fascinated by shadow theater. Later, he naturally became the author of piécettes for La Corneille and Le Decadent's Concert.

It was his meeting with Léon Xanrof , a famous French chansonnier, in 1890, that marked the start of his career as an illustrator: Xanrof commissioned him to illustrate one of his volumes. In Paris, "du Grün" was soon in demand for his fresh, personal touch, which still illustrates the spirit of Paris in 1900. Recognizable by his bold contrast of black and white with red highlights, Grün designed posters for the great Parisian music halls (Moulin Rouge, Au Violon...) and the cafés-concerts of Montmartre. In his advertising and satirical drawings for the press (L'assiette au beurre, Cocorico), we recognize a woman's face typical of her time and her neighborhood, Montmartre: sometimes brunette, sometimes blonde, but always the same carefree gaiety on a laughing face, the same bouffant hair.

At the same time, Grün continued to exhibit at the Salon des Artistes Français, and in 1911, for the Salon's 30th anniversary, the Under-Secretary of State for Fine Arts commissioned his masterpiece A Friday at the Salon des Artistes Français (Musée des Beaux-Arts, Rouen), featuring 104 well-known figures including Harpignies, Cormon, Bonnat and Sem.
