    Portrait of Marie Laurencin (1883–1956)
Noted early on by Georges Braque, Marie Laurencin quickly established herself as a singular figure on the Parisian art scene of the early 20th century. Close to André Salmon and Pablo Picasso, she also shared a significant relationship with Guillaume Apollinaire.
Initially influenced by Henri Rousseau, she very quickly developed a personal style, imbued with gentleness and delicacy, which would become her signature. During the First World War, she followed her husband, the German painter Otto von Wätjen, to Spain, where she contributed to the magazine 391 alongside Picabia, Albert Gleizes, and Arthur Cravan, while remaining aloof from Dadaist influences.

Returning to Paris in 1920, she devoted herself to painting ethereal female figures, characterized by a subtle and harmonious palette. This style brought her great success as a society portraitist.

In 1922, L’Éventail de Marie Laurencin, a collection of poems dedicated to her, was published. She also painted the famous Portrait of Mademoiselle Chanel in 1923 and designed sets for the Ballets Russes (Les Biches) and for the Comte de Beaumont's Soirée de Paris (Les Roses).
