Alphonse Birck was a painter originally from Lorraine who became famous for his Orientalist works, particularly those depicting Algeria. A precocious talent, Alphonse Birck exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français as early as 1877 with a portrait of his father, but soon left to settle in Algeria. For him, "Algeria alone encapsulates the entire Orient." He also traveled to Egypt, Palestine, and Syria in the 1890s.
He notably painted Oriental women in their daily lives, as well as landscapes in a light palette, always very colorful and luminous. Alphonse Brick demonstrates, in particular, a great talent for portraiture.

Our painting is located in Cire and is dated 1896. The sitter in this portrait has a strong personality. Her gaze is piercing, and one can clearly sense the oppressive heat of the country. The costume and jewelry are beautifully detailed and also very fine. Certainly one of his finest portraits in his series of portraits of Oriental women from the 1890s.
