Of Italian-Auvergnat heritage, Charles Pasino, born on July 4, 1950, defines himself thus:
I am an image-maker, a creator of images, carved or painted. Drawing is a necessity for me, painting a need, sculpture a given.
There was a time, not so long ago, when you would ask a painter: “Paint me an apple, a breast, a horse, a bearded man…” And there he would be, the artist whipping up a Vanitas, a nursing Madonna, a battle scene, or carving a Saint John or the figure of a prophet… depending on the request. That was back when painters had clients, and a clientele. Today, they are more likely to be asked to justify having an audience, to put together portfolios, or even to “appear on TV.” I’m not photogenic, I sing off-key, and I don’t own a television, so… I paint, I draw, I sculpt, that sort of thing. A dilettante? Why not? It is indeed one of the last bastions of freedom.
Here, a large watercolor, 75 x 55 cm – "Red Sun" – and two etchings, the enigmatic "Trinity" and the more traditional "Unicorn" – 25 x 18 cm and 27 x 19 cm – dated 1979 and printed in editions of 50 each – signed in pencil.
