Gien Manufactory. Circa 1900
28-piece earthenware dinner service, "Rooster and Peony" pattern, comprising:

12 dinner plates, 26 cm diameter
7 soup plates, 26 cm diameter
12 dessert plates, 23 cm diameter
1 compote dish on a pedestal base, 25 cm diameter
1 cake stand, 26 cm diameter
1 circular platter, 31 cm diameter
1 sauce boat with lid, 26 cm high x 27 cm wide
1 relish dish, 27 cm long x 24 cm wide
1 tureen, 26.5 cm diameter x 23 cm high
Gien Manufactory mark from 1900, indicating export.

The tureen bears a mark from 1930-1960.

Condition: Excellent
2 soup plates, 5 dinner plates, and 1 dessert plate with a yellower glaze; some crazing on the glaze of a few pieces.
1 dinner plate with two small chips in the glaze (manufacturing defect).

This rare service is renowned because the decoration is not applied by decal but painted exclusively by hand by the factory's own painters.

The Japanese-inspired motif is very elegant: a rooster among cherry blossom branches and stylized peonies.

Gien fine earthenware is unique thanks to its natural composition and the quality of its creations and forms. The clay, molds, and glazes are entirely designed and manufactured at the Gien factory. Every stage of production, from the clay to the finished plate, takes place there. A Gien plate requires 26 components and passes through the hands of 30 master potters, heirs to 200 years of expertise.
