A large, hinged medallion pendant in 750/°° yellow gold (18 KT, eagle-head hallmark) from the Napoleon III period, notable for the finesse of its goldsmithing and the richness of its openwork floral decoration.

Oval in shape, this sentimental piece features one side entirely adorned with delicate, finely openwork and chiseled plant scrolls, notably evoking acanthus leaves, whose coils intertwine with great finesse.

This particularly meticulous design is punctuated by seven generously sized fine pearls, harmoniously arranged around a central pearl, emphasizing the radiant composition of the motif. They display the characteristic color nuances and luster of these natural materials, ranging from a slightly pinkish white to golden and bluish tones.

The ornamentation extends beyond the medallion with elegant openwork volutes, arranged on either side of the oval at its top and at its base. These decorative elements, characteristic of the Second Empire’s ornamental style, give the piece a slender and refined silhouette.

The slightly flared bail is itself very finely engraved with plant motifs, reflecting the care taken with every detail of this piece of jewelry.

The reverse side, left smooth as was customary for this type of medallion, is simply accented by delicate, ornate borders.

The pendant opens to reveal two compartments designed to hold personal mementos—such as miniature portraits, photographs, or locks of hair—in keeping with the tradition of 19th-century sentiment jewelry.
These compartments are separated by a glass panel. Each of the opening sections is fitted with a small thumb tab to facilitate handling and opening—a design detail that attests to the care taken in crafting this medallion.

With its generous proportions, the delicacy of its openwork decoration, and the elegance of its composition, this pendant perfectly exemplifies the Napoleon III era’s taste for richly ornamented jewelry, combining technical virtuosity with sentimental significance.
A distinctive antique piece of jewelry, both precious and intimate, whose decorative richness and proportions give it a remarkable presence when worn.

The chain shown in the photographs is not included.
