Antique Old Mine Cut Sapphire and Diamond Ring

A "Toi et Moi" ring in 18k (750/1000) yellow and white gold, set with a very fine Old Mine Cut diamond (a beautiful crystal) weighing 1.60 carats, G VS2 clarity, and an unheated "vivid blue" cushion-cut sapphire weighing 2.997 carats. The band is further enhanced with a fine old-cut diamond. French work from the 1890s/1900s. Traces of a signature bearing the letters SS and N can be attributed to the House of Chassin, which worked for crowned heads in Europe, or possibly to the House of Mauboussin. The quality of the setting and the stones leaves no doubt as to the work of a major Parisian jeweler. A Bellerophon certificate is present for the sapphire and an LFG certificate for the diamond. The 18k gold bears the owl hallmark.

    Ring size 54.5, resizing possible
    Gross weight: 4.77 grams

Please note that the Bellerophon laboratory issued an opinion on the sapphire, deeming it unheated and of Madagascar origin. However, while sapphires were known to have been found in Madagascar at the end of the 19th century, Malagasy sapphires only began to be exported at the end of the 20th century. Therefore, it is highly unlikely that this origin is accurate. It would be anachronistic given the period in which the jewelry was made. A Ceylon origin, which represented 80-90% of the market at the time, is much more probable.
