Did you know that under the court of Louis XIV, the candlestick was also an instrument of power?

The famous candlestick was made of vermeil and had two wicks (a particularity underlined by the contemporaries, it was not the case for the queen and the princes).

Every day, at the beginning of the Grand Coucher, after the first prayers, the Grand Chamberlain, the First Gentleman of the Chamber (or in their absence, the First Valet of the Chamber) asked the king to whom he wanted to give the candlestick.

The king looked around the audience and named the one who would hold it until the end of the Grand Coucher.
In appearance, nothing could be simpler and yet what an affirmation of authority, for the king was careful to appoint only a great personage (ambassador or duke and above) for this role, which was held by a private individual, and this person considered himself honored because it came from the king and was done in the eyes of the court that coveted this honor.

This ceremony of the candlestick could be compared to a service of honor such as the presentation of the shirt at the time of the rise or that of the napkin at the time of the meals but these tasks were rightfully due to the present character of the highest rank, they were marks of dignity, whereas the handing-over of the candlestick depended only on the goodwill of the sovereign.

It was a mark of favor, and the object became an instrument of power.
