Pair of Directoire period candelabra in patinated and gilded bronze and in white and black marble. They present a decoration of winged sphinxes in patinated bronze bearing on their heads a motif of a woven basket filled with fruits and feathers from which the two arms of light separate. The base, in white marble, is decorated with a mask of Apollo in a diamond surrounded by volutes and a palmette frieze. The whole rests on a black marble base with four spinning tops.
These candelabras are in the Return from Egypt style, an aesthetic nourished by the Egyptian Expedition between 1798 and 1801. If the ornamental vocabulary was already inspired by the antique under Louis XVI, it focuses on Egyptian decoration at all beginning of the 19th century. These decorations adorned with sphinxes and palmettes will continue under the Consulate and the Empire.
Dimensions of the base: 10.5cm x 19cm (4.13 in x 7.48 in)
