Suite of four finely chased bronze candlesticks, representing Pomona, goddess of fruit and abundance, after the statue by Étienne le Hongre (Versailles, XVIIᵉ siècle).
Each candlestick features a richly detailed standing female figure, resting on a wide circular foot decorated with rinceaux and friezes in relief. The base, carefully adorned with plant motifs and stylized garlands, illustrates the refined taste of the period for classical ornament inspired by Antiquity.
A pair of almost identical candelabra from the mid-19th century is now in the Wallace Collection, London (258, F22-3). The Wallace Collection candelabra were first mentioned in the Hertford House inventories in 1890, and were present in the Long Drawing Room in 1898.
High-quality work, with an antique patina and remarkable finesse in the chasing.
