Dayak Kenya Shield
Kalimantan, Borneo. End of the 19th century, beginning of the 20th century
Wood, hair, natural pigments, rattan.
Height: 120cm; width. : 37 cm
Light wooden shield, reinforced with four rattan ties. It is adorned on each side with a complex curvilinear decoration.
On the outer part, the central element is a watch head with large eyes and a mouth with fangs. On high and low registers, we find this watch (udo or kambé) always with protruding fangs. Richly decorated with human hair fringes.
The internal part is decorated with eight intertwined dragons. The sculpted handle features a crocodile.
Polychromy preserved, normal wear.
