FACE PROTECTION called Menpō
Japan, Showa Period
Iron, pigment, and case
A two-part iron mepō or menpō of the me no shita men type, covering the chin, the nose, and the cheekbones along the lower contour of the eyes. The second, removable part protects the nose and the red-pigmented upper lip topped with a light-colored horsehair mustache.
The chin section has an ase nagashi no ana (a circular hole) that allowed ventilation and the evacuation of liquids such as sweat. The inside of the half-mask is covered with red pigments to prevent irritation of the samurai's skin.
It also features a four-bladed gorget braided with blue cloth. Menpō were an integral part of Japanese samurai armor.
This menpō features a gilded finish, likely restored. Overall, it is in good condition.
On a base.
