Set of WAR HELMET called KABUTO with MEMPO and Oni maedaté
    Type EBOSHI
    Japan Edo period (1603–1868)
    Iron, brass, lacquer, wood.

Kabuto of the eboshi type in painted iron; it consists of a helmet (hachi) whose bomb is monoxyl; the curve line is emphasized by a crest. On the back, the monoxyl band (koshimaki) is riveted.
A short lateral fin (fukigaeshi) adorns each side.
The front part of the helmet is decorated with a removable brass ornament called maedaté. The latter represents an Oni; it is in gilded wood and the eyes are decorated with pearls.
The neck cover (shikiro), articulated with four slats, with an emphasized curve.
The interior is lined with red fabric.
The kabuto is completed with its facial protection called mempo with four-blade gorget. Wrinkles on the cheeks and cheekbones accentuate the resemblance with real physical features. It is decorated with a horsehair moustache. Red lacquered interior.

The kabuto is an object steeped in tradition for Japanese culture. An integral part of military armor, it was that of high-ranking samurai.
