The artist is an important representative of German post-war informal art. Initially post-cubist in the 1930s, he moved to abstraction from the mid-1940s.
He paints paintings that he calls "structures" and "wall paintings" on which he applies thick layers of paint in relief using spatulas and brushes.
In 1959, he participated in Documenta 2, Cassel.
from 1958 to 1980, he exhibited in numerous galleries and museums.
The particularity of his painting lies in its independent position within German informal art of the 50s/60s.
