19th century French school, scene of architectural caprice by Joseph dit Paul-Martin (1799- after 1861). Oil on canvas signed and dated 1857. Presented in a fine 19th-century gilded wood channel frame.
By architectural caprice, we mean that our painting represents an imaginary city, an imbrication of architectures and monuments born in the painter's mind. The elements and buildings depicted probably exist in different places and are here brought together by the painter in an original composition. It's difficult to date the period the artist intended to represent, obviously a fairy-tale 17th or 18th century if the clothes are anything to go by.
A fine large-format painting, highly decorative and evocative of eclecticism under the Second Empire.
Painting in very good, clean condition. Antique refinishing. Antique frame gilded with gold leaf, adapted to the dimensions of the painting.
Frame: 145cm x 113cm
