This painting bears the strong realistic imprint of Courbet's paintings. Edward Chappel was a member of the 'Als ik kan' movement founded in Antwerp in 1883. This painting dates from the period of his return from his apprenticeship in Paris (1880-1881) and his artistic debut in Antwerp (1883-1885).
