Eugène Galien Laloue 1854-1941
The Village
Oil on canvas
Signed lower left Eugène Galiany
Dimensions: 65 x 57 cm
A French painter born in Montmartre in 1854, the son of Charles Laloue, a theatrical set designer, he trained under Léon Germain Pelouse, a painter of the Barbizon school. Recruited at a young age by the French Railway Company to design the routes of the railway lines from Paris to the provinces, he painted numerous landscapes and villages during these projects. His depictions of Parisian neighborhoods, whose architecture he portrays with respect, established him as a master of the genre; his many gouache paintings are highly sought after today.
